Dengue Fever is No Joke

Our son contracted the viral infection Dengue Fever. He has had fever, muscle and joint pains, excessive tiredness, headache, nausea and nosebleeds. he hasn’t eaten in four days. Its shocking and frightening. I thought it was food poisoning for a couple of days before even realizing how sick he was. Fogging has reportedly begun on New Providence island but I haven’t seen any trucks in my neighbourhood. In the meantime we saw the doctor, we don’t go outside at dawn or dusk, we dumped the little bowls of water we had put out in the yard a few weeks ago in the hopes of cultivating some frogs, I am spraying the patio and front yard with raid, yes I know this is un-green, but our son is sick and our daughter is only two, she gets bitten all the time. These are serious times. We all must take proper precautions. And we need to amp up the national response to the outbreak of Dengue Fever in Nassau. This thing is no joke.

As much as the Dengue is driving you crazy, it is giving me a headache just trying to keep abreast of its spread in the Caribbean.

From my blog reporting on the situation in the Bahamas especially, I am concerned at the amount of fogging that is being done. You see, there is such a thing as "resistance." Wanton fogging allows the Dengue mosquitoes to develop resistance to the chemicals. Thereafter, you can fog all you want...

I wonder how much work is being done on the ground to empower the population to eliminate the breeding places of the Aedes aegypti mosquito in and around the home and place of work. The point being that we must de-emphasize chemical control in favour of physical and biological control. That is only viable way.

Fogging without getting rid of the breeding places is of no use, much like counting sand.

Thank you for your comment, you are absolutely right. Physical and biological control over chemical control is of course the better way.
